I had a customer who asked about updating the shopping cart in our store. In this case she wanted to add more then one of the same item to her cart.
What she would need to do is: enter the number of items she wants to purchase on the quantity field next to the item in the shopping cart and then click the update button. That would then updated the cart and the new total will show in the cart.
She can then choose to continue shopping or checkout.
This is a screen shot of the cart, notice the Red arrows for the locations of the two steps.
