I guess this is sort of a case of “if you can’t beat’em, join’em. Scared of swine flu, unable to protect yourself, and too cautious to get those flu shots that might actually make you sick from the flu in the firist place? We understand perfectly. So if you want to alleviate some stress about the issue, the best thing to do might be to get a stuffed plush H1N1 swine flu toy for you, or your suffering swine-flu-infected loved one, may he or she regain his or her health as soon as possible.
The toy is seven inches, and is now on sale at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s gift shop in Atlanta. The gift shop is a nonprofit business that the CDC employees operate for fun. I mean, when you work with deadly infectious diseases literally all day, you’ve got to do something that takes the edge off. So you make dolls shaped like the deadly diseases and you sell them to tourists who probably just exited the nearby CNN building or the Coke factory or something, and all the other Atlanta tourist attractions.
“The H1N1 doll is a big hit,” CDC spokesman Dave Daigle said. “People will buy it to explain the virus to children. You’ll also find other people who just have to have it for whatever reason.”
“The main thrust is education,” said Charles Foster, the company’s director of operations and business development. “But there is definitely humor in some of it.”
Other big items in the CDC gift store: disease-themed ties and scarves. Customers seem to agree that even the deadliest microbe can make a very stylish pattern.
