A holiday party is a great way to bring people together and celebrate your holiday spirit. If you’re throwing a holiday party this year and you want to keep it green, there are few things you should know beforehand. Keeping your waste down and shopping local for your foods are jus the beginning. Here are a few tips to get you started in making your holiday party as green and as much fun as possible.
Natural Decorations
It’s not a party without decorations! When you’re looking for decorations don’t buy commercial pieces made out of plastic. Go into your backyard and find fallen pine branches and pinecones. You can easily fashion some great decorations with these items. String pine branches together with red ribbon to give your decorations a holiday feel.
Lower The Lights
If you have holiday lights in your home you can lower the lights enough to give the home a very cozy feel. Not only will add ambience to your party, it will keep your energy consumption to a minimum. LED lights are the best for keeping the lighting crisp and they consume a minimal amount of electricity.
Local Spirits
If you’re serving spirits at your party, buy locally. Every town has a local brewery or wine distributor. Make sure that you’re buying locally because this cuts down on the amount of gas needed to replace the bottles on the shelf. Most breweries and wineries will allow you to taste-test any spirits before you buy them to make sure that you’re buying something you like. Remember that your guests might not have the same tastes as you so buy a variety or spirits for your party.
Heat
Turn the down heat when you have people over. If there are going to be a lot of people at your home you can afford to turn down the heat. Not only will you be lowering your energy consumption, it’s likely to go unnoticed. When a lot of people gather in a small space the heat from their bodies warms up the surroundings.
Food
Whether you’re planning on serving snacks or a full meal at your party, shop locally and organically. Go to your local farmers market to find food for your party. You’re likely to find some great vegetables and locally produced meat. This will also cut down on the carbon footprint of shipping while giving you organic treats for your guests.
