When we think of jewelry, the first thing that pops into our head is usually gold, silver, or maybe even platinum. All very nice and expensive. People will ask, “is that platinum?” and you’ll say, “yup” and look all cool. But then it’ll get scratched, and you won’t look so cool anymore. The truth is, as precious as these metals are, they’re all pretty soft, easily damaged, and certainly won’t retain their shine indefinitely. But here’s the surprise. There is one less expensive metal that will.
It’s called tungsten carbide, and next to diamond, it is the hardest substance known on the planet. This stuff will literally wear down a chainsaw, and maintain its shine for years.
What this video shows, if anything, is that if you’re married, you have a tungsten carbide ring, and you’ve got a splotch on the bottom of your pot that just won’t go away since you burned the spaghetti five weeks ago, take off your ring and start scrubbing. The splotch will fade away into the dustbin of burnt-food history, but your ring will keep refracting and reflecting that light. It’s even scary sometimes how persistent it is, because beyond removing the splotch, the pot will show the marks where the ring actually dug into it.
While we all know it’s nice to have a ring that will clean pots, open beer bottles, and in weapon-form shoot through bullet-proof vests, if you’re into that sort of thing, expand thought for a second. Doesn’t everything you wear get scratched, eventually? Take your watch. Bezel looking beat? Get a tungsten watch and that won’t happen.
Here’s a fun one for the pyromaniacs, or just the strong lighter enthusiasts who don’t necessarily need to set things on fire all the time. (Use with caution.)
