The Philosophy of David Gerstein

April 26th, 2010 · No Comments · Original Artwork, Reviews

David Gerstein is a masterful painter and sculptor. He works with hand painted, serigraph, silk screen printing and cut out steel, creating a brilliantly colorful multi-layered universe inspired by Graffiti art, Pop art and other modern types of artwork.

David Gerstein’s repertoire includes large scale urban sculptures, currently displayed around the world, wall sculptures, small three dimensional multi-layered cutout sculptures, designer jewelry items, Judaica art, nuvo home decor and paintings.

He studied art at the Bezalel Art Academy in Jerusalem, Ecole Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris, Arts Students League in New York and St. Martin’s School of Art in London.

As an artist, David Gerstein seeks to expand the limits of two-dimensional paintings into three-dimensional sculptures. In his choice of background he tries to dispel the existing barriers between the work of art and its audience by creating enchanted and straightforward images, at times rendering intimate, dream-like scenes and at other times, CinemaScope-like, large scale, choreographed festivities.
The colorful syntax which is his signature developed gradually. It really reflects a search for a distinct voice, which ranges from the local to the universal and echoes several levels of representation simultaneously.
