For all of Sarah Jessica Parker’s career, a cute mole has graced her chin. In the summer of 2008, it mysteriously disappeared and gossip websites made a whole hoopla about it. Well the talented actress appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman on Tuesday night, and gave an explanation.

“I didn’t have strong feelings. I didn’t object to it. I just didn’t care for it…I did it cavalierly. In fact, a family member did it.” She explained that her brother-in-law is a plastic surgeon, so she had him remove the mole. “I had about six free days where I could be bloody and scabbed and nobody will care.”

Sarah Jessica then joked about a woman who came up to her on a beach after the mole was removed, and accused her of getting rid of her “signature.”

“I was like, ‘My mole was my signature? Isn’t my brain my signature? For about the next 15 minutes I couldn’t hear anything because I thought I’d make a terrible mistake. Can they put it back on?”
