MUGI – My Unique Gift Idea

I have a friend who recently got married, and he was generally disappointed with the gifts he received. Not that he was bitter, but he was expecting some cool nifty things he could play with and show off. He got a lot of fruit bowls, which happens to the best of us.

Acutely aware of the need to have something really neeto you can show your friends, I myself turned in some of the multiple fruit bowls I got at my own wedding (one I kept, in case I ever did need to display fruit in heavy crystal for some reason), and bought two Rabbit Corkscrews with store credit from fruit bowl proceeds. One of the corkscrews I kept for myself, silently thanking all those who gave me the fruit bowls that sated me the store credit I needed for an over-engineered wine-gadget. I also got a giant spatula.

The other one, I kept for my friend. When I gave it to him, he suddenly let lose with all the emotional frustration of not getting a single cool gadget, and he couldn’t hold himself back from opening two wine bottles on the spot, just to try the thing out.

“I got it from fruit bowl credit,” I told him. “I can probably make a down payment on a house with fruit bowl credit,” he told me. But I knew from his expression that this wine-opener was much better than a down payment on real estate to him.

It was a real moment of male bonding. We looked into the Rabbit’s eyes, and then we kind of grunted and snorted a bit and said, “Yeah yeah…pretty awesome…don’t share it with your wife,” in low raspy voices, shook hands and stuff.

So whenever we have guests over, we shower them with the benevolence of allowing them to use our Rabbit to open wine bottles. They always go home happy.
