Prepared Food can be a Comforting Gift to Many

lasagnaTrinkets and objects and cool gadgets and jewelry of course have their place, but when there’s a significant occasion in your friend’s life, he or she probably needs something more practical that will take some of the stress and edge off. Usually, a birth of a baby, a passing of a relative, a baby shower, a graduation, any of these will require a lot of people to celebrate, and that means there will be lots of food needs.

There is a standing Jewish tradition for centuries that mourners in their first week since the passing of a relative are provided with food to cover their needs for the week, since they will not be going out shopping in a state of shock and loss. The same works for big parties, where it is genuinely difficult to get everything put together without a good friend supplying some of the needs for the party.

And what about when your friend is just having a bad week? He lost his job, his wife left him, his kid ran off to Thailand on a spiritual quest involving lots of potential drugs and other shady stuff and he’s scared for him, or who knows what. A pot of hot soup could do a lot more to calm his nerves than a standard thoughtful gift.

Foods that can be frozen are preferred as gifts, unless they can be eaten immediately. Big perishable things are likely to cause more stress than they alleviate, because now you’ve got this big thing to eat and you can’t do it and you start worrying about it.

So reach out and give your friend some lasagna. It comes in more handy than a fancy lasagna baking dish sometimes.
