They offered her $10 million, she asked for $20, and now Paula Abdul is saying that she left American Idol in principle, and that money had nothing to do with it. OK.
“I had to stand on my principle,” Abdul, 47, told TV Guide. “I’m going to miss the experience of watching young talent evolve into a place where they get to take off and soar.”
“I stand on principle where many people stand on money,” she continued. “I’m a hard-working artist. I’ve lasted in this business for 23 years. And you can’t do that unless you are good at what you do.” That’s probably very true.
Abdul, the daughter of a Syrian Jewish immigrant who owned a gravel company, is an American Dream success story, and now she wants to take that success to the talk show world. (I, myself, am quite the gravel connoisseur. I like the gray kind. How much does gravel go for these days?) “It would be a lot of fun variety with a ton of unexpected stuff and tributes to everyday people getting their big chance,” she said of possibly hosting a talk show.
She also said that, though she has left American Idol, she will still continue to watch it as new talent unfolds on stage. “I had some really unforgettable moments that hit plateaus for me and I’m very blessed to have been a part of what made television history.”
We wish her luck, and are of course anxious to find out where, when, and on what channel, her new talk show will air.
I kind of like the idea of people chanting “Paula!” instead of “Jerry!” Let’s hope she makes the Syrian Jewish community proud.
