On November 2nd I wrote about one Kabbalah secret of Hanukkah which has to do with the parallels between the soul and the Hanukkia, or menorah, namely we talked about the brighter and darker aspect of the flame.
For this installment I want to address not the nine flames or the candles, but instead the vessel which is used for holding the oil.
We likened the quality of the olive oil to our souls, and we said that the bottom part of the flame represented the part of the soul which struggles to show love for the Divine and the upper part, the brighter part of the flame with the Blessings that we willingly bring to The Holy One. It goes without saying that the better the quality of the olive oil, which is the effort we put into our spirituality and the way we invite it into our homes, results in a more beautiful flame.
However what spiritual substance does the vessel which is used for holding the oil bring? We may look at the vessel as our Love for the Divine, itself, where as the oil refers to the Action of How we express this Love.
So if you possess quality olive oil for your Hannukah menorah, you better make sure that you also possess a worthy vessel for holding it.
