Some may not know that there is such a thing as the National Toy Hall of Fame…but there is, and guess what just made the list? Why it’s the original Nintendo Game Boy.
The Game Boy is the best selling portable video game system ever. It has over the years entertained countless children and adults, alike. It was selected to join the National Toy Hall of Fame, in honor of its “revolutionary features and impact on pop culture.”
In a press release, a representative of the National Toy Hall of Fame said,
“Over the past two decades, Game Boy has become synonymous with hand-held gaming fun…its portability and efficient design, ability to allow simultaneous multiplayer gaming, and scores of intriguing games (like Tetris and Super Mario Land, featuring Nintendo’s already-iconic character Mario) make it a true innovator.”
The Game Boy beat out nine other classic toys on its fight for recognition at the Hall. Among the list of runner-ups were, Hot Wheels, Cabbage Patch Kids and the Rubik’s Cube and Big Wheel.
Nintendo’s timeless toy is the second video game system to earn honors at the National Toy Hall of Fame. The first? Atari 2600, which was inducted in 2007.
The National Toy Hall of Fame, which is housed at the Strong National Museum of Play, was established in 1998. To date, there are 44 toys in the Hall of Fame.
The original list of inductees is as follows:
Barbie, Crayola Crayon, Erector Set, Etch-A-Sketch, Frisbee, Hula Hoop, Lego, Lincoln Logs, Marbles, Monopoly, Play-Doh, Radio Flyer Wagon, Roller Skates, Teddy Bear, Tinkertoy, View-master and the Duncan Yo-Yo.
