I came across these Flaming Martini Bug Repellers at a place called Uncommongoods. They are simple martini glasses, though filled with citronella gel, complete with olive for full martini effect. If you have someone who really likes martinis, or wants to make people think he likes martinis, or wants to confuse people by seeing if they’ll try to actually drink the citronella martini, or any other similar goal in mind, then these would fit the profile. Oh, he should also want to repel bugs, particularly mosquitoes.
For those who live in a tropical climate, like I myself once did in Miami, doing an outdoor picnic was less than impossible without some sort of bug deflecting system. And they can get pretty violent in Miami, with those bug zappers and such. During the summer months, it can even get scary. You’ve got hundreds of mosquitoes headed for that bright light in the sky in waves, and then they just get electrocuted in droves. It’s enough to cause a power outage some days, or so I imagine.
Consider this a less violent approach to getting the bugs to leave you alone and let you and your friends dine in peace. While the mosquitoes won’t necessarily understand that it’s a martini glass, your guests will. Impressing the mosquitoes doesn’t matter so much. It’s the humans that count, ain’t it?
But here’s my question. Can’t you get your own martini glass and olive and citronella gel and make one of these yourself? Maybe you can. But if you don’t have that sort of know how, pick these up.
