He survived a plane crash one year ago only to be found dead in his apartment on Friday in New York City. Adam Goldstein, otherwise known as DJ AM, is dead at 36. A crackpipe and prescription drugs were found in his room near his body, found face down on the floor. Authorities have not yet done an autopsy so the cause of death is undetermined, but drugs were likely involved.
Friends of the DJ were reporting that a recent breakup with model Hayley Wood left him an emotional wreck.
The friend who called 911 on Friday, prompting police to enter Goldstein’s apartment, told the dispatcher that Goldstein hadn’t been seen for two days. On Thursday, however, a day before his death, he had tweeted the following message: “New york, new york. Big city of dreams, but everything in new york ain’t always what it seems.”
Goldstein had spoken of previous drug addictions to crack/cocaine and ecstasy and difficulty overcoming them, though he claimed he had been drug free for years.
The DJ had previously spokes about a past suicide attempt that prompted him to check into rehab. “I went into my living room, reached into a cabinet above my TV and grabbed my gun, a loaded .22. I sat back on my heels, cocked it and put it into my mouth. I pulled the trigger. The gun didn’t go off. I thought, ‘Are you kidding me? I’m such an [expletive] failure I can’t even kill myself? I dropped the gun and broke down. That was the turning point in my life.”
Though it is unclear if this case was actually a suicide, there is still something inordinately frustrating about successful celebrities who throw their lives away. With every means at their disposal to improve themselves, see the world beyond what most people are even capable of, they repeatedly resort to the underworld of drugs and darkness.
I hope he and Michael Jackson are learning together wherever the afterlife is.
