72 Names of God – Part 2

Moses Parting the Red SeaIn Part one we discussed what are they and where do they come from. Now, what do they mean?

Here’s a beginning to a possible answer.

The verses describe a confluence of three spheres of existence. God the ultimate, Angel the intermediary, and Man (Moses) stretching out his hand to get the process going. We also have a pillar of “darkness” strangely “illuminating” the night, so whatever is being sensed is beyond the human brain’s ability to process. The same thing happened during the Revelation at Sinai, where the people “saw” sounds and “heard” sights.

72 Names of God JewelryEach 3 letter name of the 72 names may constitute one of the realms (Pictured: 72 Names of God jewelry bracelet). Bringing them all together may seem like an impossible task, like illuminating the night with darkness, but this is precisely the point. Life, sometimes, seems like an impossible contradiction. We are reminded by the 72 names that though it certainly seems that way, our minds are not meant to process the entire reality of life itself. But even so, we can painstakingly put pieces together and slowly but surely find the names of God in the mess of things.

And why 72? Perhaps, as Moses was commanded to bring together 70 elders to judge the nation with Moses at the head of the court, that makes 71. But the court can’t function without God’s sanction, which makes 72. Partnership between man and God seems impossible, but the 72 names remind us not only that it’s possible. It’s essential for our continued existence as humans made in God’s image.
